Hannah Paulsberg Concept and Magnus Broo - Daughter of the Sea

Label: Odin Records
Format: CD
Impressive free jazz-influenced joint album from Norwegian experimental outfit the Hanna Paulsberg Concept and Swedish trumpet player Magnus Broo

Review

Led by Oscar Grönberg on piano, the Hanna Paulsberg Concept sound like Thelonius Monk has just stepped up from his grave. The way that Grönberg handles the keyboards on 'Daughter of the Sun' gives away how tightly knit Monk and Grönberg probably are. Grönberg is not an equal virtuoso and is un-deranged unlike Monk, but nonetheless shows himself to be a faithful discipline. The Hanna Paulsberg Concept also welcomes Magnus Broo in order to extend the quartet to a quintet, his trumpet challenging Paulsberg's saxophone. Not fully the way they intended, Paula and Magnus perform their dominance rituals on brass instruments, but Oscar Grünberg delivers the icing on the cake. The truly awful graphic design of the album sleeve does genuine harm to its intrinsic quality. With so many turns to take, 'Daughter of the Sun' sheds brand new light on the Hanna Paulsberg Concept. The combo's fourth album is one to treasure. 'Hemulen Tar Ferie' features one of Oscar Grönberg's finest performances ever. And in all honesty, the Hanna Paulsberg Concept isn't about her, or Sweden's Magnus Broo.
