Lend Me Your Underbelly - Hover

Label: Epigenetic Records
Format: CDS
Courageous but flawed narrative folktronica on mini-album from Lend Me Your Underbelly, the moniker for Utrecht musician Chris Berends

Review

Rather vague and pretentious, this time-consuming exercise merges urban field recordings and studio noodlings. It is pleasantly disturbing though, as if a tubeway platform musician has almost managed to stop an oncoming train. Indecipherable words ruin the tranquillity of opening track 'Everything',just when it could have become a battle between the Penguin Café Orchestra and Origamibiro. A wee bit too self-indulgent in its vocals, its bright strengths, however, pertain during the closing minutes of the second track, 'Was'. The album's five track titles read as one sentence by the way: "Everything Was Deep Dark Green". The fourth track, 'Dark', becomes mysteriously sinister in its latter stage. Diabolic bird twittering is thrown up against a stream of fine tuned folktronica now, and this marks one of the few genuine surprises. The album embraces the combined wealths of field and home computer recordings but fails to deliver an original brew. File under Urban Rainbow Forest Recordings.
