Jont - Hello Halifax

Label: JONT
Format: CD
Soulful but lyrically middle-of-the-road latest album from Nova Scotia-based singer-songwriter and troubadour, Jont

Review

'Hello Halifax' is the result of singer-songwriter Jont's ambitious walkabout. After travelling the world, guitar in hand and voice at the ready, he experienced great loneliness whilst trying to redefine himself. Finally, he settled in Nova Scotia. His recording includes a songbook with some guitar chords listed and others left to the imagination. Jost has a steady expressive country voice. He's not afraid to take his time with the way he interprets what he discovers out in the world. Songs like 'Forcefield' allow him to "play songs to strangers" and "watch the waves crash." On 'Lucky Leaf Falls,' he almost whispers his message and on 'Teardrops and Pennies' he brings out raw emotion with only a few words and a mournful bass line. Singer Jennah Barry adds some final touches on vocals and piano as does Ken Corbett on his demonstrative double bass. Jont could benefit from working harder on his lyrical content, which relies often on familiar themes, but he is genuine and soulful and understands how to heart of a troubador.
