Crybaby - We're Supposed to Be in Love

Label: Helium Records
Format: CDS
Melancholic latest EP from Crybaby, the project of Bristol-based musician Daneil Coughlan, which recalls classic singer-songwriters such as Scott Walker and Roy Orbison

Review

With Richard Hawley moving in a heavier direction on his recent 'Standing at the Sky's Edge', a vacancy in the indie crooner category has arisen and, as if by magic, Bristol's Daniel Coughlan aka Crybaby has arrived to amply fill the void. 'We're Supposed to Be in Love' is the third single to be lifted from a self-titled debut LP, and probably the highlight of it, as Coughlan conjures up a melancholic masterpiece of failing love much in the vein of the classic tortured troubadours of old such as Scott Walker and Roy Orbison. There are subtle hints of Morrissey in there too, but Coughlan is a serious talent in his own right. A couple of well observed cover versions, 'True Love Will Find You in the End' and 'Gloomy Sunday', together with another original in the shape of 'Water to Wine' complete the EP nicely. As an introduction to Crybaby this is a pretty fair starting point, but you could do much worse that snap up the album as well. The world will catch on sooner or later.
