Great Lake Swimmers - New Wild Everywhere

Label: Nettwerk Music Group
Format: CD
Atmospheric and cinematic country-infused Americana on second album from Canadian band, Great Lake Swimmers

'New Wild Everywhere' is a great album to drive to; when the early-morning sun is coming in through the windows, bathing you in its warming glow as Great Lake Swimmers’ gorgeous, sweeping music fills the space around you. It would probably be ten times more impressive if you were driving anywhere other than the A228 between Maidstone and West Malling, where I was listening to it. Great Lake Swimmers’ second album is country-infused Americana at its best – which is odd, as they’re actually Canadian, although singer/songwriter Tony Dekker has noted Gram Parsons and Hank Williams among his influences. It’s easy to see why the band have become firm favourites of fans and artists alike, with Feist and Robert Plant asking them to open for them on tours in the last couple of years. Every song on 'New Wild Everywhere' has a rich, cinematic quality; it feels like an event unto itself, an album where you can put everything else aside and just listen. With an album like this, it’s hard to pick stand-out tracks, because you really get the sense that the album was written as one whole piece rather than being a selection of separate songs. Having said that, ‘The Knife’ makes the hands on the back of my neck stand up, so I guess that says something about it. Going back to and pulling together a few things I’ve said before; when I did listen to this album in my car, I hesitated a few minutes once I’d reached my destination before I turned the stereo off; just like a good film, it’s hard to turn this record off halfway through – once you’ve started it, you want to listen right through to the end. And then probably start over again.
