Review
Syd Arthur, a Canterbury based quartet has played together live since 2006, turning a lot of heads at gigs from Glastonbury to the Secret Garden. 'Ode to the Summer' is their first released recording- a true beginning for the band.
'The song 'Ode to the Summer' starts off with stinging electric guitar and flows into a hypnotic beat including fine instrumentals. An intriguing lead vocal accompanies an up tempo raved-up psychedelic sound. This record fascinates: trippy, yet with something of a pop feel.
The lyrics include a wistful longing for summer past, yet laced with a bit of optimism: “I look to the sky with sunken eyes for the feeling our summer has left me behind/The rainclouds are forming in the skies to the east/Hold on until tomorrow.”
A mix of 1960s and 1970s influenced psychedelia, yet with a vibe that is current: I look forward to what comes next for Syd Arthur.
