In his 'Evidently Spencertown' poetry column Spencer Robertshaw in a Christmas poem writes with typical thought and humour about Playstations, Xboxs and Wiis
Article
Ho ho ho the red man’s here
Bringing kids some Christmas cheer
Making adults run about
Bank balance does the twist and shout
Playstation, Xbox and Wii together
Glued to the telly whatever the weather
Kids get hunchback and repetitive strain
Get the high score on the latest game
To the opticians because they’ve damaged their eyes
And never ate those fucking mince pies
Video games full of violence and hate
Wonder why your child has just stabbed his mate
Their reality has become a blur
Commanding armies from the bedroom chair
Zombies are now not in the game
Notice your children looking the same
It’s harmless fun we are told
Just as long as the games are sold
Believe the hype and pay your cash
Watch your kids shoot and smash
Reality and video start to meet
When they go on the street
It’s just a game, it can't be bad
Can't be sending my child mad
Not even had a bite to eat
Its four days since they stood on their feet
Nintendo’s re-wired the grey matter
As long as the blood and guts make a splatter
Killing dragons,flying high
And they never wonder why
They look like shit and smell the same
Just stop them playing that fucking game
Back to reality with a crash
Don’t give Microsoft all your cash
Pixelated cranial pie, a painful stoop and lazy eye
These are the gifts being the Dragonmaster
A living, breathing keyboard disaster
Go outside to that alien land
As long as you can still stand
A breath of air, a bit of sun
Remember what it’s like to have real fun?
