Powerful and dynamic debut EP from fiery-sounding Cambridge-based four-piece, Lonely The Brave
Review
Cambridge fans are renowned for supporting their local bands and Lonely The Brave, in their debut EP 'Backroads', surely bring the energy and excitement that a live performance generates to the fore. Recorded locally, as well, in Cambridgeshire at Half Ton Studios, there’s a freshness and satisfying crescendo in the five tracks that make you wish you were amongst the crowds. Recently Dan P Carter at Radio 1 requested that they record a live session for his Rock Show; further evidence that the word is spreading.
The quartet consists of Mark Trotter (guitar), Andrew Bushen (bass), Gavin Edgeley (drums) and Dave Jakes( vocals). Though the band has been influenced by Springsteen and This Will Destroy You, they uniquely synthesize their heroes whilst distinctly resembling no other. What seems like their signature tune, ‘Backroads’ is recorded twice; apparently the lyrics have been memorized by their strong, loyal following. ‘Black Saucers’ and ‘Call of Horses’ are both majestic in scope, yielding Jakes’ brilliantly clear, sonic interpretations; Edgeley’s sure-fire drumming and Trotter’s broad-stroke shredding.
The four members are tight-knit and sensitive to their mates’ dynamic outpourings. Though, the vocal melodies are strong, they never overshadow the rhythm section. That said, the songs themselves overpower any of the elements within.
According to a Cambridge local, the group dynamic works well on stage, too. With a mix of personalities ranging from shy to extremely out-going, and a constant thread of rising, but satisfying tension emanating song to song, Lonely The Brave have carefully balanced their songwriting themes with expert articulation. It’s no wonder they’ve packed the pubs and will, undoubtedly, flood the venues.
