Violent Soho - Jesus Stole My Girlfriend

Label: Ecstatic Peace!
Format: 7"
Compelling new single from critically mauled Australian grunge rockers, Violent Soho

Review

Out now on Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth’s Ecstatic Peace label is the sophomore LP from Violent Soho. Each and every review I have read about it has been negative, hailing the group as derivative Australian grunge no hopers with more in common with late period Weezer than the original ethos of the spunky Seattle scene. On the first listen of 'Jesus Stole My Girlfriend', the first single taken from it (and actually a hangover from their debut record We Don’t Belong Here) I found the critics to be right. It sounded to me like any of the one hit wonders that hit during the third wave of grunge such as Tripping Daisy’s 'I Got a Girl'. After having the single rattling around in my head for a month I have changed my opinion. Whilst the comparisons are spot on the criticism stinks of journalist snobbery. 'Jesus Stole My Girlfriend' is a blast. Weezer never step on the overdrive to the excess that Violent Soho do here and 'I Got a Girl' was a hit for the same reason this should be. It’s just a damn fine bubble gum rock track, be it released a decade too late. Thurston Moore may not have lost his mojo just yet….
