Sublime reworking of trip hop star Tricky's 2008 album 'Knowle West Boy' by American production duo South Rakkas Crew into upbeat dance numbers
Review
In which the South Rakkas Crew do a musical Gok Wan, injecting the Trickster’s rasping, dark night of the soul music with lashings of ‘you go girl’-style pizzazz.
And who’d have thought the old curmudgeon would respond so well to being swept up, up, and away by these 24-hour party people? Crammed full of dubstep squelches, disco-ey strings, groovy electronica and even Balkan violins, this is the sound of Tricky having the best time since, well, forever.
From ‘Cross To Bear’, with its huge, samba band drums, to the compelling, stuttering, ‘Baligaga’ and the vocoder-heavy ‘Far Away’ this could so easily have been one big ‘morning after the night before’ mess. But no, we’ve arrived at this party just as it’s getting going.
Released on the brink of the Christmas party season, and without a sleigh bell or a novelty cover version in sight, ‘Tricky Meets…’ is one worthy cheese-free addition to any festive gathering. And it sounds serious about getting you dancing right through till Xmas 2010. Really, we’re up for it. You?
