Millimetre - Heliography

Label: Orectic Recordings
Format: CD
Eclectic trance rock on third album from Millimetre, the project of Northern Irish musician Terence J. McGaughey, which is sometimes let down by its slow pace

Review

This is a very eclectic and trance-like in places offering from Northern Irish musician and DJ Terence J. McGaughey, who produces music under the moniker of Millimetre. Mixing a very indie feel to more subtly electronic sounds, Millimetre's music have a very full sound to it. On some tracks, this sounds almost Beatles like, particularly on ‘The Goose and the Cobra’ which delves into the slightly trippy, psychedelic realm of things. There’s a hint of Hot Chip as well with busy percussion beating throughout the songs. ‘A Great Sun’ and ‘Malachi’s Dream’ has a real 80s kick to it with a repetitive synth looping throughout the song and adding a slight hint of a very chilled-out Happy Mondays into the mix. With a very ‘London-centric’ feel to it, this sounds like the sort of thing you’d hear in the trendier part of the capital, but this sometime gave the feel of background music, rather than attention-grabbing music. The problem I found with some of these songs is that they never quite seem to get going. It took me to a certain point then didn’t really deliver and this made it hard to really get into them. The more impressive moments, for me, came on the slower more downbeat songs such as ‘Soul at Work’ and ‘Atheist’ which darkly drift along and have a real edge to them with McGaughey's poet like vocals really shining through. This is a pretty good collection of songs over all, but I just felt let down on the more upbeat songs, which seemed to lack the deliverance of the slower, subtler songs. I would have liked to see the faster paced songs really set the album apart and reach where I felt they should go. Overall though Millimetre has a definite sound to them and the production quality throughout is second to none. I just wanted the pace to pick up a lot more in some places.
