Deltasound - Dust Can Explode

Label: Deltasound
Format: CDS
Ambitious third single from inventive Newcastle dance rock act, Deltasound

Review

On Deltasound's past two records, 'EP1' and 'EP2', the throaty forty-roll-ups-a-day roar of Jonjo McNeill's vocals was the stand-out instrument. Of its four members, only McNeill had been in a group before, and it was inevitable as both the lyricist and Deltasound’s founder that he would on those early recordings be the dominant factor. In the two years since this Newcastle dance rock act formed, they have rehearsed and gigged relentlessly, playing eighty shows across the UK in venues as far apart as London and Inverness. It is a great testament to its other members and how much Deltasound have grown, both as a live act and a band, that a year on since their last studio recording McNeill's existential vocals and lyrics, which this time intriguingly examine metaphysics, solid as they are, are on their latest single, 'Dust Can Explode', the least commanding element present. Irrestible as it is inventive, 'Dust Can Explode' is breathtaking. McNeill and Andrew Ridley's whirring, whirlwind guitars ; Adrian Huggins's jabbing bass lines and Craig Hutchinson's surging drum work gel together over the course of five and a half fiery minutes to create a record of stop-start beats, klaxoning riffs and thunderous, epic sound. While musically complex, 'Dust Can Explode' also has an equal sense of melody and rhythm. Its B side, 'Knives', builds on from where its finishes, and equally ambitious and creative, is another number of swooping rollercoaster contrasts, spiralling noise effects and smouldering tensions. Deltasound are currently working on their debut album. With this exciting third offering, this already promising act has raised its own game for it considerably.
