Ribbons - Royals

Label: Osaka Records
Format: CD
Unimaginative and dispensable folktronica on debut album from Ribbons, the project of west coast American musician and Xiu Xiu collaborator Jherek Bischoff

Review

Shortly after I had sent in my ten favourite albums for the year 2008, Ribbons' new album came in to remind me of Testcard's far superior 'Lines' CD. Both 'Lines' and 'Royals' flirt with melody. On 'Royals', Ribbons, however, quickly lose their trail and soon enough a pompous display of a lack of ideas becomes poignantly clear. Ribbons zigzag through post-rock marshes and plough fields of muddy would-be treasures, only to dig up nothing new, alas. The tiresome imagery that 'Royals' is able to evoke, is that of an album of sheer, non-descript folktronica muzak. Rank as unimaginative and dispensable.
