Beautifully melodic and uplifting indie pop on inspiring second album from Australian act, the Boat People
Review
Australian four piece the Boat People make pleasant and instantly enjoyable light-hearted indie music. ‘Chandeliers’ is the band's second album and will no doubt solidify their popularity in their home country. If it gets enough air play the world over I’m sure they will gain many, many fans along the way as well.
With beautiful melodies and uplifting tunes the Boat People have a real knack for writing tunes and lyrics. They strike that perfect balance of creating both joyous tunes and perfectly crafted songs. Lead singles, ‘Unsettle My Heart’ and ‘Tell Someone Who Cares’, both stand out. The latter is definitely one of the best songs on the album and sounds to me like a Britpop version of Crowded House with its dreamy and heart-melting vocals. I’m already on about the twentieth repeat of ‘Tell Someone Who Cares’. It’s one of those songs you have to hear again and again. If this tune doesn’t stick in your mind then I don’t know what will.
The Boat People are a band for fans of current indie favourites such as Death Cab For Cutie, the Shins and Los Campesinos. They are the sort of band that embrace the poppier elements of music with fantastic credibility. Songs such as ‘Hours and Hours’, ‘Panic’ and ‘As if I could’ show off the band's strength in harmonies with all four members, Robin Waters, James O’Brien, Charles Dugan and Tony Garrett, all pitching in on vocals. This is a talented band who are a joy to listen to.
