Capillary Action - So Embarrassing

Label: Pangaea Recordings
Format: CD
Excellent and eclectic noise rock on debut album from Seattle-based collective Capillary Action, slightly marred by its sometimes rather dire vocals

Review

This busy and chaotic combo from Seattle is new to me but, on the evidence of 'So Embarrassing', the members of Capillary Action have caused a racket before. They move in one step from a multitasking instrumental collective to a simply ferocious fountain of structured but noisy music. The contrasting jazzy licks on the keyboards and from the horns work much better than the sometimes rather dire vocals. Very hasty music ought to reflect our times but when you give Capillary Action all your attention the album doesn't really work. The words reflect the bonanza and mayhem you have just listened to and become pointless. Concentrating on the music from instruments is much more rewarding, with the exception of 'Badlands' where the vocals actually contribute to this zany thunderstorm of an album. Capillary Action excel in brevity. They snappily race through a variety of music styles. 'So Embarrassing' is rendered with such venom and speed though that it gets past its aim. It's a whitewash that leaves almost nothing to the imagination. Excellent noise though. They're the Mothers of Invention of today, but lack the socio-political wit of Frank Zappa.
