Made Out of Babies - The Ruiner

Label: The End
Format: CD
Fine stoner rock on third album from New York-based group Made out of Babies, helped in no small part by the stunning vocal talents of singer Julie Christmas

Review

Brooklyn, New York natives Made out of Babies are on course for getting the underground rumbling (literally) with their third album ‘The Ruiner’. With an intense and sludgy feel throughout their songs, they have managed to make a pretty damn good stoner rock-esque album, helped in no small part by the female vocal talents of Julie Christmas, while blending elements of extreme metal with a real hardcore edge. ‘Cooker’ kicks off the album in an almost up beat manner and has effects running wild through its tune before huge guitars kick in around which Julie's vocals whir. The soaring ‘Invisible Ink’ has almost Kate Bush-like vocals that bring a really soulful quality to the album and shows the group's diversity and range. ‘The Major’ is, however, a sleazy rock ‘n roll number with a filthy distorted bass line and hypnotic vocal style. ‘Peew’ is disgracefully low and dirty, but quickly breaks into screaming intensity with Julie's vocals veering from quiet to loud without any problem at all. This band have a really unique sound, with low sludge-core guitars and bass driving the songs but the female vocals giving it a real sense of self.
