Black Canvas - Broken Dreams

Label: Cool and Deadly
Format: 12"
Fine jungle and dub remixes on latest twelve inch only vinyl single from Black Canvas, the project of Gloucester-based reggae duo Mr. Melody and Rider Shafique

Review

The rootsy old skool reggae of the original 'Broken Dreams', which is based on a gentle finger piano riff, has a subtle top-40 quality. The Black Grass version has toasting from Melody and harmony singing over a much wobblier dub mix. The third version on the A-Side initially brings in spacy jungle beats as the vocals get wound up, but then moves smartly to drum and bass whilst putting more emphasis on the chorus of angelic vocals. A shiphorn stars on the flip, in the drum and bass instrumental. Last but least, Zed Bias returns to the scene he helped shape. Zed's mix kicks off very downbeat but changes to a higher gear and introduces tabla percussion. Zed's instrumental loses itself somewhere, but this was a generous offer on twelve inch vinyl already, so who's complaining?

Track Listing:-

1 Broken Dreams (Drum N Bass Mix)
2 Broken Dreams (Zed Bias Dub Mix)
