Wild Beasts - Limbo, Panto

Label: Domino Records
Format: CD
Operatic and often carefreeingly daft, but enjoyable debut album from new indie outfit, the Wild Beasts

Review

Hayden Thorpe may sound as if he ran off after a failed opera audition but he fronts Wild Beasts with unusual flair. This performer pur sang appears alarmingly confident and convincing for a debutant. 'Limbo, Panto' is a classic album with 5 tracks on each 'side' and, if you are somewhat allergic to theatrical behaviour, then you may need to pause after 5 tracks on the CD or any other digital sound carrier. There is silky sarcasm going hand-in-hand with grand gestures. Ben Little leads on guitar and leaves Thorpe no place to go all over the top. Wild Beasts play contemporary waltzes, recorded in south Sweden, that however do not always sink in entirely. Unluckily enough, 'Limbo, Panto' only comes a month after the release of The Sparks' 21st album which is superior in any sense, yet this first full-length is rather jolly and knows excellent moments as in 'She Purred, While I Grrred'. A certain carefree daftness made this an enjoyable listen, equally borrowing from puppet theatre and the 'recognised arts'
