Review

The third release of Filthy Little Angels’ offshoot Leaving Home is a split vinyl only EP, which features two tracks each from Manchester act the Star Fighter Pilot and Durham-based outfit the Colt 45s. The Star Fighter Pilot, the project of synthesiser player and singer Martin Bryant, has built up a large following locally. ‘Another Penny’ is reminiscent of Soft Cell, and has a laid back groove of a vocal from Martin, which he sings as a duet with a female singer. His next offering is ‘Drunk with You’, which again has a very early 80’s synth- based pop sound and is quite possibly a future teenage anthem. The Colt 45's ‘Rocket Fuel’ sounds like the Cure in approximately 1980 but has a Banshees cry of a vocal from girl singer Anne-Marie Atkinson who sings this as a duet with Keith Hansom. It is charming and very fresh. ‘Dry London Gin’ is much more doom-ridden in sound and sounds like a great Cure track with keyboards to match. Keith’s vocals sound somewhere between those of Robert Smith and Terry Hall from their early days before they became great singers. It is again sung as a duet, but of the two singers Anne-Marie has a much stronger voice.
