Anomalies - Employee of the Month

Label: Beyond Records
Format: CDS
Fine hip hop which throws in elements of swing, reggae and indie on debut single from hard touring Hereford-based band the Anomalies

Review

Hereford’s finest hip hop group the Anomalies create a truly diverse and modern sounding version of hip hop. Combining the usual elements of hip hop with many styles of music including a bit of swing, reggae and indie, they make interesting listening, but at the same time don't make the mistake of cramming everything all in at once. ‘Employee of the Month’ is the Anomalies' first single and gives a great glimpse into their sound which is instantly accessible and certainly has a great style. With the opening chords and first vocals, they sound like a number of better indie bands who are down to their accents unmistakably English, yet as soon as the beats kick in it is clear that you are not listening to another group of tight jeaned fellas with big hair. The trumpets which help to add an element of swing make this song really interesting. . The B-side ‘Hats and Glasses’ really made me sit up and listen and got in my head just that bit more that the single did. With a slightly faster paced beat, the chorus immediately grabbed me and was lodged in my head upon first listen. A tale of those parties we’ve all had the mispleasure of being at, there are more samples and scratches on display here giving it more of a traditional hip hop feel. Currently doing some relentless touring all over the UK the Anomalies are bound to be coming to a town near you.
