Slightly lacklustre American-influenced girl rock on debut single from new band the Favours which hearkens back to the 1980's
Review
Heart-mangling emotional torture being the bedrock of all truly great art (possibly with the exception of the Archies’ 'Sugar Sugar'), can someone please tell us why 'Islands', the Favours’ hymn to loneliness and isolation, is delivered with the pain of a slightly irritated driver phoning the AA to inform them their car won’t start?
This girl rock lite gallops along melodically enough, though, and to be fair, if it was 1985 in the US and 'Islands' was sung by a sexy older-lady type such as Stevie Nicks or Cher, it’d be staring in the face of an extended stint at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. And with 'American Idol' runner up Chris Daughtry proving drivetime AOR is still a big proposition over the pond, maybe it’s not Islands you should be thinking about, Favours – but an Atlantic crossing instead.
