Review

These four live tracks find Yo La Tengo at their best and rawest ever if that is possible. A new track opens it called ‘El Es Gay’, which is very full on and has wild guitar performed in manic fashion. Completely unreleased until now, it is a pure chunk of experimental improvisation. ‘Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind’ is an 11 minute version of the track from their recent album ‘I’m Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass’. It sounds like the Velvet Underground at the time of ‘White Light/White Heat’ and has distorted vocals that melt into the music like another instrument. ‘The Weakest Part’ is a piano and vocal version of another track from ‘I’m Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass’ and is played by Georgia Hubley. Joint vocals between her and Ira Kaplan at the end make it sound like the Velvets’ Lou and Moe doing a duet. ‘Luci Baines’ closes the EP. It is a cover of a pre Love Arthur Lee recording by his band the American Four from 1964. Yo La Tengo really do make it sound like it was recorded in 64, giving it something of the sound of ‘Twist and Shout’ by the Beatles.
