KarmaDeva - Dreamless Sleep

Label: iTUNES
Format: CDS
Eerie, but enjoyable post punk on new download EP from Bath-based post punks, Karma Deva

Review

I recently saw Bath's Karma Deva support the Italian Cure tribute band Easy Cure at the annual Cure Drink in London. As Easy Cure's drummer was sick, Karama Deva’s drummer, Gavin Loynes, learned the Cure tribute set in the afternoon and saved the day. The band are fronted by headstrong female vocalist JJ Stanness, who has worked on the BBC2 cult television show, ‘Nighty Night'. They have in the past opened for bands such as Echobelly, the Damned and Arthur Lee and Love. The eerie ‘Broken’ opens this download only EP. JJ's vocal sounds like an elegant combination of Patti Smith and Siouxsie Sioux. The guitars shimmer in and out, while the bass and drums are edgy and dark. ‘Longing’ is slow paced, dark imaged and has a killer hook, JJ’s vocal again is haunting and recollects All About Eve, whose Julianne Regan is a fan of the group. ‘Forgive Me’ is also slow and sounds almost confessional. Backed by an acoustic guitar, JJ’s vocals are crystal clear. ‘Diamond” ends the EP, and sounds like a gothic mix of Kate Bush and Garbage. This is lovely stuff indeed.
