Triumphantly melancholic set of country songs about cheating, drinking and unfulfilled passions on second album from American-based punks, Whiskey and Co

Review

A triumphantly melancholic set of country songs from Whiskey and Co grace this mini-album. Tales of cheating, drinking and unfulfilled passions. Sometimes by the numbers but never missing a beat, the eight tracks here have the timeless quality of classic country. Although resolutely American heartland’s music, the emotions and stories apply anywhere. Men and women drink and fail to communicate properly. Standout among them is the celebration of whiskey ‘Happy Hour’ where sultry singer Kim Helm explains “the sober man’s secret is the drunken man’s speech – so I get up on this bar stool and preach." This is a relatively upbeat distraction from the general soaring misery of the album though – from the bitter ‘One Man (Too Many)’ where Helm bemoans the man next to her not being the one she wants to ‘Never Said Nothin’’ where she complains of much the same problem. So long as you are not her boyfriend then, you should love this.
