Strangely empty-sounding EP from much acclaimed British singer-songwriter Rob McCulloch who has drawn comparisons with both Richard Aschcroft and Paul Weller
Review
A strangely empty release this one. Rob McCulloch hits all the right notes playing the troubled balladeer. Unfortunately he never convinces that it isn’t just a role he is playing, however well.
‘Something Abuse’ does possess the troubled, brooding quality he is so clearly aiming for but in aiming so clearly and calculatingly it looses any scaffolding that would prop-up its ambitions.
It is undoubtedly a competent, even in places pretty tune. But rather like a packet of 10p crisps however much you enjoy eating them there is little real substance and once you finish the hunger for something more substantial quickly reappears.
