Arrogants - You've Always Known When Best To Say Goodbye

Label: Select Label
Format: CD
Enjoyable, but uneven and overlong debut album from Cranberries and Sundays-inspired American indiepop quintet, the Arrogants

Review

Well, it took some time, but here it is: the first album from The Arrogants. In 2000 and 2002, they released two CD EPs on the great Shelflife label, but since then we haven’t heard anything from this American quintet. And I must say, they know how to give you a lot of music for your money! 23 tracks, plus a DVD full of goodies like videos, exclusive songs as MP3-files and so on. The press release for this album mentions the Cranberries and the Sundays as influences, and well… they are quite right about that. It’s as if Harriett Wheeler of the Sundays has become the vocalist for the Cranberries, and that is a good thing for me, as I have never been able to stand Dolores O Riordan's voice. I can also hear some similarities to bands like Letters To Cleo and all those other groups who rose to fame when their music was used in a high school film in the 90’s. Some of the songs here have been released earlier, on the Shelflife-EP’s, and they are still good. And the rest of the album is also quite good, even though I get the feeling that it’s a bit uneven. Some of the songs are really great, while some are just plain boring or too noisy. Even though it’s impressive when a band manages to record a 23-track long album, I often think that half the songs would have been enough. This is such an album.
