Firebug - End Of The World

Label: Select Label
Format: CDS
New single from Californian four piece Fire Bug, which recalls both PJ Harvey and the Throwing Muses

Review

Fire Bug hail from Hollywood, California and consists of Juliette Tworsey on vocals and guitar, Jules Shapiro on lead guitar, Ian Solomon from Gwen Stefani's backing band on bass and Ty Dennis from the Doors of the 21st Century (who are now playing as Riders on the Storm) on drums. Juliette and Jules come originally from Chicago, but headed out to L.A. where they now play often at its many venues. 'End of the World' is their new EP. The title track is at over 7 minutes very long, and starts with some gentle guitar playing and a delicate vocal from Juliette that brings to mind PJ Harvey and the Throwing Muses. The music is minimal to begin with, but gets louder as 'End of the World' progresses with the guitars becoming stronger and the bass and drums giving the track an added lift. It eventually becomes a rock number, but one of very serious attitude. Masterfully played, it is a definite head bopper. 'Paradise' also recalls PJ Harvey and the Muses. It is louder and more full on and has the added bonus of some sad string arrangements, which bring it down a peg and give it a different texture. The ending is as elegant as any classic rock track, with some strong hymn-like harmonies. 'Forever Won't Wait' is a country number with a groove so melancholic that it is almost bluesy. Juliette's vocal is assisted by the pitter patter of drum beat that is as haunting as it is beautiful. The last track is an edit of 'End of the World'. A damn fine band and one worth checking out.
