Indiana Gregg - Something Like Me

Label: One Stone
Format: CD
Expensively-marketed, but uninspiring soul pop on debut album from award winning songwriter Indiana Gregg

Review

Indiana Gregg’s album arrived alongside what I deemed to be a suspiciously expensive-looking press release: a professionally printed mini-folder with “Award Winning Songwriter” written on the front, and selected quotes like “Songs with soul, pop with presence…a breathtaking new talent” all over it. Inside, along with the CD, were two information sheets printed on that special smooth paper that isn’t quite paper and it’s not quite card but it squeaks when you rub your thumb on it. These contained the usual biography and some quotes from Indiana herself. “Music creates mood, changes your state of mind and brings out emotions,” she says. “This is music with a message. For me, it’s not a song unless it touches your heart.” Presumably she is talking about songs such as 'Crazy Crazy Crazy'and 'Groovy Kinda Wonderful'. In case you haven’t guessed already, I don’t really like this album. It sounds like someone who is trying their hardest to rock out, when really they would rather be busy working on their dance routine with the other girls that make up Scandelicious (feel free to insert your own, suitably pun-tastic would-be girl band name). I’d say that ‘Something Like Me’ rates somewhere between Avril Lavigne and Sheryl Crow, which I suppose could be taken as a compliment by some people- trust me, I don’t mean it as one. Saying that, this is just the sort of album which will appeal to fans of those two artists, and it will probably sell incredibly well.
