Beastie Boys - Solid Gold Hits

Label: Parlophone
Format: CD
Enjoyable greatest hits compilation from durable indie hip-hoppers the Beastie Boys

Review

Together since '84 and making hit singles since '87, Brooklyn's Beastie Boys finally release a Greatest Hits album, but unless you like their music already this won't really be for you. 'So What Cha Want' is loud, booming hip-hop with wiry guitar and some strong Hammond organ. 'Brass Monkey' is more rappy style hip hop with a drum-style beat and 'Ch-check It Out' is louder and party fuellied with a big black funky 70's groove. 'No Sleep to Brooklyn' keeps the hip-hop beat, but is more of a rock anthem and recollects Joan Jett's '81 hit (I love) Rock n roll'. 'Hey Ladies' features a three piece rap vocal and again has a 70's groove, while 'Pass the Mic' is loud and doomy with big drums and a hard rock beat. 'An Open Letter to NYC' was written in tribute to the events of 9/11, while 'Root Down' has a dirty 70's funky beat. 'Shake Your Rump' is a rocking number involving more 70's grooves. Both 'Intergalactic' and 'Sure Shot' are modern in sound and involve scratching. 'Body Movin' ' is a Fat Boy Slim remix and sounds like it, while 'Triple Trouble' is an anti advertising number. 'Sabotage' is another rocker. It ends with 'Fight for Your Right to Party', their anthem for everyone not to conform. It is still as classic as the day it was released, and a call for you not to take the same road in life as your parents.
