Numbers - We're Animals

Label: Kill Rock Stars
Format: CD
Fantastic punk funk, released on cooler than thou label Kill Rock Stars, from San Francisco three piece Numbers

Review

The third full length LP from San Francisco three piece Numbers is a revelation, a punk funk record that has revived a genre left flaccid by an overkill of Rapture copyists. Now on cooler than thou label Kill Rock Stars (home of Deerhoof and The Paperchase) Numbers have almost guaranteed themselves a lifetime of All Tomorrow's Parties' line ups and profit free cult status. The album is driven by petrol powered moogs and detuned guitars, a constant machinated rumble that carries the discordant boy/girl vocals like a Cadillac shuddering across a desert backdrop. Tracks like ‘The Fuck You Garage’ take the chunky back beat and add razor sharp riffs that Andy Gill would be proud of, whereas ‘Funny But Sad’ could easily be Kim Deal fronting Air without all the blessed out noodling, only for them to be suddenly taken by Death Disco at the wrong speed. We’re Animals is jerky, funky and occasionally disturbingly dark. It veers from punk funkateering to kraut noir experimentation, constantly guided by a grinding moog rhythm and those would-be-shouty girl next door vocals so inherent to the US indie scene. This album is a fantastic slice of reborn and reinvigorated west coast cool. A must.
