Fast and furious punk pop from Aberdeen-based the Needles, who show themselves to be a band to watch in the vein of Franz Ferdinand and Dogs Die in Hot Cars
Review
Formed in the late 90s the Needles are an Aberdeen-based band who are being hailed by the NME as a band to watch in the vein of Franz Ferdinand and Dogs Die in Hot Cars.
This is the band’s third EP released on Dangerous Records, and builds on the sound of the previous EP, 'Under the City'. The title track '1,2,3…5' and the fourth track, 'The Hurt', are fast and furious punk pop with a really energetic sound. The second track 'Panic on Easy Street' is slower with a poppier, catchier tune which has a summer feel, and is reminiscent of the Undertones.
The third track, 'Beautiful Dream' has a 60's Beach Boys 'easy listening sound. It is not really to my taste and it seemed a contrast to the other tracks on the EP. I kept expecting it to turn fast and thrashy at any moment, but it wasn’t to be and it seemed out of place next to the other tracks, but then maybe that was the idea.
The band already have a core following, and are definitely worth catching live for their onstage antics, as well as their music. Be prepared to be entertained.
