"Fragile and heartfelt" weird folkish debut offering from Ted Barnes, Beth Orton's guitarist and right hand man
Review
Ted Barnes ? Who is Ted Barnes ? I have been watching Ted Barnes live since 1996. Ted Barnes is my beloved Beth Orton's right hand man, and the only other person who has appeared on all her records and who is still in her band.
'Short Scenes' is fragile and heartfelt, a late night album or an early morning riser. While it is folkish and largely instrumental, Ted does some have vocals on it, which are a bit like those of Tom Waits in their delivery.
Beth Orton makes an appearance on 'Ted's Waltz', a different version of which appears on her latest album, 'Daybreaker'. Other guests on this include members of Beth's current band, Lincoln, Red Snapper and Sunhouse.
It's an album that sounds of time, out of place and on its own little planet, which is no bad thing. At its heart, it is folk, but at its weirdest,. It is probably the most uncommercial record that you will hear this year. Good on you, Ted !
