Nautilus - Are You An Axolotl

Label: Planet Mu
Format: CD
"Enjoyable" release by Texan solo artist, which combines Braindance style electronic music with hip hop

Review

Nautilis is an interesting project from Skyler McGlothin from Denton, Texas. This record combines electronic music in the Braindance vein, though generally in a more relaxed style, with some strange hip-hop. It is strange because the rapping style is very quiet, not at all what one would expect. At first, I’ll have to admit, I didn’t like it much – though I loved the instrumental based tracks – but this vocal style has really grown on me, and now I think that its really effective. This is the sort of CD I would recommend to anyone with an interest in dance/rap/electronica buying because it takes a fresh approach, and is sure to impress. At times the music is guilty of drifting a bit, and sometimes can be short of genuine hooks but on the whole it is strong. It is refreshing to hear a brand new approach, and I think that it has the potential to improve further still. Keep an eye on Nautilis, but for now this album represents a fresh take on an established sound, and while by no means the best music I’ve ever heard is still enjoyable.
