Review
'Dinosaur Act' is the first single to be lifted from the new Steve Albini produced Low album, which is due in February. This single raises huge expectations for the album because, to be honest, it is exceptionally good.
The traditional Low style is maintained with slow strummed guitar parts and a slow beating drum part. Steve Albini's influence shows as the drums and bass are brought out above the guitars, creating a low dark style. The vocal harmonies, however, are the highlight of the track. They are really evident on LOW songs because of the very slow tempo, giving them ages to develop.
On the second side of the single version there is 'Overhead'. Whilst this is not as strong as the A side it is still a fantastic song. Daniel Huffman is credited on the sleeve as providing "noises". These noises, quiet static and detuned radio noises, make up most of the backing track whilst the harmonies go over the top. Granted, this will never be played as much as side A and it is clearly "the B Side", but I was still impressed!
Low are probably one of the more accessible independent bands around. Their songs sound great from the first listen and I would guess that anyone who has any interest in indie music would love this record. John Peel said it best on Radio One - "This is some of the most inclusive music I have ever heard."
