Review
Suckle's debut album 'Against Nurture' album is upright, tender and outspoken. Since it is released by Chemikal Underground, it's inevitable not to see Suckle apart from those other bands on that label, Arab Strap and The Delgados. Like the first group Suckle know how to tell a quality story. With the latter they share the same subdued sense of sounding and have a similar rumbling rhythm section.
Singer Frances, who used to be in The Vaselines, is a yoga teacher, which may explain the mature balance in each song. Stand out tracks such as 'Saturn', 'How Do You Know', and 'So Happy Before 'all have graceful harmonies. This album is the conclusion of years of maturing songwriting. They are compassionate and tell true stories.
'Against Nurture' echoes the feedback of Sonic Youth within the frame set of Great Scottish balladry. These are very fine songs that have been brought to us with great care, Suckle's 'Against Nurture' will be counted amongst this year's best debuts.
