People get ready. Hey! I said people get ready! Estrus Records is one of those labels that will never steer you wrong. One of those labels where you will need to collect every record of every band they’ve got. Case in point with relative newcomers: the Mooney Suzuki (this is their first full-length...). Did I at one point say that New York City was at a musical standpoint these days? I must have overlooked the Mooney Suzuki. Pure rock and roll at its finest (...notice I didn’t say rock ‘n’ roll, because that would do a disservice to this noise). And even though “physically” they’ve got the whole mod-thing going on, musically there’s a thicker R & B bent happening, which really is the heart of sixties mod music to boot. And while you sense things like the Small Faces and the Velvet Underground all tangled up in there somewhere, what you’re really hearing is something a little more rockin’ like the Makers or the MC5. And these boys: Sammy James Jr., D. Jones, Graham Tyler and Will Rockwell, definitely have their rock and roll attitude down in spades.
Recorded by the legendary Tim Kerr in Texas, veteran to a number of great punk bands and now producer/sound engineer to a number more, it’s no wonder this record blisters the way it does. Check out these boys in black. Solid, no holds lyrics to boot: “When I say that I love you / I MEAN that I love you”...I need to be loved like that, but loving this album will have to do for now.
