Review
This is a real treat and an album that fully lives up to expectations. The greatest surprise is the coherence on the Simian debut 'Chemistry is What We Are'. Simian's psychedelic grandeur touches on the esoteric, yet uses regular means to do so. They're perceptive fellows with a great ear for harmony and composition. Simian are into raising a new standard from the vaults of Big Star, the Beach Boys and Soft Machine.
Very well mannered, as in British, 'Chemistry is What We Are' is a slow burner and just the same, a jewelled debut. Bewildering moments alternate with tales of monumental beauty. Simian combine transitional innovation with warmth and beauty. They're a distinguished bunch and amazingly never give a dull moment on this, their fine debut for Southern Records. A few tracks from their two EPs have been included and then there's plenty more vogueish harmony post-pop to please a demanding listener.
