Max Tundra is an oddball who has had releases on most of the UK's prestigious labels. His reputation within the maverick music-industry as the Wizard of Oz is confirmed on his debut for the Domino label. He proves himself a bewildering multi instrumentalist, either sampling breathtakingly or originating new sides of composition. The man is a little genius. The opening track -and single- 'Cakes' has an inescapable swirl. From there on, you're taken to all corners by this musical mastermind. Beat, avant-garde, dub, electro, new wave ! You name it ! Max Tundra sums up all these styles with apt compositions. The closing track 'Carbon Cones' takes up twelve minutes of your time, but in exchange also offers twelve minutes you wouldn't want to miss. Working with rather basic material, "Some Best Friend…" manages to sound very direct and also down to earth. It very spiritedly restructures minimalist music into accessible poppy patterns, and also builds harmony even from its most distorted pieces. Just the same, one can be thrilled by this album. It rocks. Enjoy its puns , even though you may not get them all.
