Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - Still Barking

Zena Greig discovers an expansive new box from the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band to be an idiosyncratic de3light.

Seven years in the making, a new retrospective DVD/CD box set is being released in December, celebrating the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, their name inspired by a famous postcard character in the 1920s and Dadaism. Formed in the early 60s by Art students Vivian Stanshall and Rodney Slater, the group began their musical career as a jazz ensemble parodying the music of the 1920s and 1930s, before evolving into a remarkable, distinctive force in rock and comedy, gaining national fame following their appearances on the TV programme ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’, their satirical skills making them a favourite on the London underground scene. In addition to remastered versions of the band’s original albums, the new DVD/CD set contains previously unreleased outtakes, BBC sessions, short films and live recordings and films of concerts performed in Europe and the USA, as well as an accompanying book featuring archive writings, tributes, memorabilia, photographs and a detailed chronology of the band. The set showcases the band’s considerable musical prowess, alongside their inimitable comic flair. What to look out for in this 17CD/3 DVD collection are: hit single ‘I’m The Urban Spaceman’, produced under a pseudonym by Paul McCartney; the truly bizarre ‘Look Out, There’s a Monster Coming’; a CD featuring a live show from London’s Marquee Club; and the track ‘Boo!’, coming out as a new single at the end of October, a song originally recorded as a demo in 1969 by band members Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall and never previously released in its forthcoming Alt version. A cornucopia of the unpredictable, exotic, idiosyncratic, this is a colourful collection which is likely to delight staunch followers and new fans.
