Punchy twelfth album from grunge rock pioneers Pearl Jam
Review
Pearl Jam are one of the grunge era's greatest survivors.
On their latest album ‘Dark Matter’ the band head right back to basics with skilled guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready to the fore and some fast and furious riffs! This is a punchy come-back record as the band look back to their formative days in 1990s Seattle with new producer Andrew Watt emphasising the band's traditional strengths whilst adding many modern touches - just as he did on the Rolling Stones' widely-acclaimed 2023 ‘Hackney Diamonds’ album.
The hard rock numbers on ‘Dark Matter’ are nicely balanced by some quieter moments and a highlight is frontman Eddie Vedder singing with true affection of his daughters Olivia and Harper on the tender ‘Something Special’.
Pearl Jam's fans will enjoy every moment of ‘Dark Matter’ - but it is an impressive album that should win the band many new friends too.
