Slackers - Better Late Than Never

Label: Brainlab Groove
Format: CD
Unimaginative debut album from 1996 from New York ska-poseurs the Slackers which has just been released in a new double LP version

Review

New York collective the Slackers mix together jazz reggae with flavours of trumpeting ska. Not to be confused with 'Slackers' produced by Lee Perry around 1979, their music gears up towards an uptempo frenzy, but proves to be little else than muzak-ska. It is quiet tedious being forced to listen to 'Better Late Than Never' for professional purposes. It's an album best enjoyed not vinyl but on shuffle mode on the local pub CD player. Not too loud of course. The album will not spoil your mood, won't make you thirsty and might even cause a bit of small toe action inside your shoe. It brings a new dimension to the concept of boredom.

Slackers - Minerva, Southend, 10/5/2003
Playing in the world's most dismal toilet venue, and against a crowd of skinhead thugs, New York reggae seven piece the Slackers manage to transcend the grim circumstances, and to play "quite honestly the greatest gig" that Julia Willis has ever seen
