Ultimately disappointing free download EP from usually excellent New York-based violinist and experimentalist, Kono Michi
Review
Although modesty has been set aside as a long lost virtue with her label proclaiming her as being “a "violin virtuoso”, Kono Michi actually brings us some great new wave pop music on this free download EP.
It starts well with the twisted jig of 'Animal in the Sky'. But most importantly of all, she is rather a good singer. Her timbre is lovely and, as her voice fades on 'You Are the First', the silence from the microphone leaves space for some excellent banjo playing. 'Rain' then is the first composition with a decent share of both her snare do's and vocals.
The title track, alas, however is wasted with monk-like humming just as the violin play started to get interesting. “Lalalalala" and all that, which remains my main objection here; one can actually record music without pre-considering how to get it on BBC Radio6.
The closing 'That Knock Is For Me' at least sees the violin and her voice fall in place with the sounds of the members of the Stone Ghost Collective, who are half of the Dawn of the Replicants. ‘My Monster’ is nice, yet 'they' can do much better than this.
