50's influenced, cinematic-sounding pop on impressive new single from Essex-based singer, Gemma Ray
Review
Gemma Ray hails from Essex and has a vocal that recalls Julee Cruise singing on ‘Blue Velvet’.
‘Hard Shoulder’ has a classic 50's mournful, cinematic sound. It is sad in its delivery, but has much more charm than mockneys such as Lily Allen and Kate Nash.
‘Name Your Lord’, its B side, is more guitar based.Gemma sounds on it like PJ Harvey, but more brooding.
She has just finished recorded her debut album, ‘The Leader’ . It is produced by Michael J Sheehy, who was formerly the front man with Dream Film City Club, Joy Division fans’ favourite other band.
