London soul singer and keyboardist Andrew Roachford is best known for his big 1988 hit, 'Cuddly Toy'. He has spent much of the last decade as one of the two main vocalists in Mike + The Mechanics which was a side-project for Genesis's Mike Rutherford. This successful spell introduced Roachford to a new audience.
He has, however, now returned to his roots and there is a new Andrew Roachford album featuring retro R & B.
Although Roachford suffered vocal cord issues with a major operation in 2018, mercifully the singer's rich voice is evidently intact and some of the singing on the new album is gloriously powerful. Backed by members of Amy Winehouse's old band, Roachford tackles the album's Motown homages and melodramatic piano ballads with great aplomb – and he can still belt out a rasping chorus with the best of them! But he also knows when to show tender restraint and feeling, too. A highlight of the new album is 'What We Had', a duet with Beverley Knight – performed in compelling style.
This album is definitely a welcome return to familiar territory for Andrew Roachford and it should prove a big success with his many fans.
