Franklin, a.k.a. Frank Rabeyrolles writes matured, silky earworm pop music despite being of an early age. ‘Cold Dreamer’ could be the ultimate Californian Dream album of today's global boredom. It flirts with the freewheeling attitude of the sunny state on the West Coast and manages to yet sound flatter than Flanders or Holland. The album sounds though, as if somewhere down the line, someone pulled the plug at experimental label Plug Research in Los Angeles. This dragging dream/shoegaze pop must have earned a place somehow there.
Lazy, sunbaken and unspecified, 'Cold Dreamer' breezingly provides the obligatory with the overly obvious. The atmospherics remain quite charming, and to its benefit it must be mentioned the album excels in brevity with none of the seventeen tracks lasting very long. Upon thorough inspection, and still unable to detect one single original melody, 'Poets and Walls' starts off using a good bassline, yet however soon loses itself in easy euro disco-pop melody lines. 'Snow Waltz' isn't of any greater help either. The tracks on 'Cold Dreamer' tend to epitomize selfish laziness, which leads me to the unfortunate belief that, after Daft Punk and the Arctic Monkeys, Franklin may yet shift millions of copies.
