If someone would like to call Tullycraft “the masters of pop reference” I wouldn’t object. The first song I heard by them (as far as I can remember) was the now classic 'Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend’s Too Stupid to Know About', where the title actually says it all. And a couple of years later they released the single 'Twee', a song that more or less defined a whole music scene. In the song, singer Sean Tollefson is namedropping bands, songs, labels… you name it. And of course all the indie kids of the time (including me) loved them for it!
Since then, they have released a couple of more albums, none of which I have bothered to listen more closely to, mostly because they seem to write and record the same songs over and over again. The new album, 'Lost in Light Rotation', is sadly no exception. While listening to this for the first time, I found myself singing along to most of the songs, even though I have never heard them before. Some of the songs are even carbon-copies of older Tullycraft songs, like the title track, which sounds a bit too much like 'Wild Bikini'from the 'Beat Surf fun' album.
Okay, you might have guessed that I’m not really convinced that this is a great album? Well, it isn’t. But then again, if you like Tullycraft and can never get enough of their songs: this is the one album you have to buy this year. I guarantee!
On a more positive note: I’m very glad to hear that the Bside to the single, 'Bad Connection', actually proves to be a cover version of the fantastic Yazoo song. With that said, it’s nowhere near the original, but it proves that the band still has a knack for picking great songs to record cover versions of!
