'Dawn of Delight' is ultissimo sixties. On the second track 'Age of Attraction' Tropical Popsicle, who come from San Diego, California, manage to turn a typical Velvet Underground riff into a jolly beat music tune. Still mid-tempo, and in a summer daze, the mood changes to new wave synth pop music from the late 1970s on 'Ghost Beacons' which was one of Tropical Popsicle earliest recordings. 'The Beach with no Footprints' uses simplistic synthesizer loops and, released 30 years earlier, it may have been a single on Zoo or a minor hit for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
Sonic buzz over melodic Jesus And Mary Chain riff raff defines the next few tracks. On 'The Tethers' the twanging twist resurfaces in this seemingly odd pastiche of sounds. 'View from the Dihedral Wall' and 'Canyons' divide the two sides to this album. The phlegmatic stance, which lead to this carefree pose, continues on 'Cathedral City' and the wonderfully jangling 'Havana'.
The highlights of this album have are still to come. 'The Omnipresent Heart Shield' is built on exquisite finger-picking folk music, and garnished with psychedelic effects. The penultimate track 'Queen of New York' is unashamedly JAMC but yet fits this bill. The album rounds off with the anthemic 'The Universe of God Shadow', which has an epic quality and combines this with clumsy lyrical pretensions. It is quite peculiar that a band from San Diego, sounds so dangerously like one from the border area of Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

Excellent, but confusing debut album from San Diego-based act Tropical Popiscle, who surprisingly take many of their influences from the North-West UK scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s
