Rock bands like Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi and Guns 'n' Roses bore me to tears. They have always bored me and they will always bore me because they play to a rigid formula of noise with no room for imagination. Don’t get me wrong. I love rock bands, but I go for bands like 3 Colours Red, the Cult, Hundred Reasons, New Model Army, and Groop Dogdrill, bands that try to stay away from rock by numbers and to do something with a bit more imagination

When nu-metal came along, crossing metal and rap, it was for a while new, exciting, powerful and imaginative, but like every other musical movement since rock and roll began it quickly became diluted with poor imitations. As such my interest in nu-metal was severely tested, tested to the extent that whenever I saw a sticker on a CD that said ‘The new Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ I avoided it completely.

Terra Diablo have gone some way in restoring my faith in nu-metal, I dare say the band would hate being labelled a nu-metal act, but 'Deluge Songs' sits somewhere between nu-metal and indie rock. Think Hundred Reasons doing Red Hot Chilli Peppers and you have kind of got Terra Diablo. These four guys from Scotland play with conviction and technical competence. They have spent time studying how other bands construct their songs and they have managed to take the good parts of what they were listening to and combine them together to make their own sound. Every song is different and each song does not bleed or spill into another. It is rich in its diversity, depth and breath; it’s one of those records that you will play again straight after it has finished.

It’s difficult to find fault with an album like this. I keep trying to find something that I can pick at but all I end up doing is wasting my time. I can think of a thousand ways to waste a tenner but buying this album isn’t one of them. If you want to make a friend buy them this album. You’ll have a friend for life.
