All things must come to an end, or at least that's what they say.
Sometimes that's all for the best, but in this case, it's a sad farewell.
The Fairways released their debut album, "Is Everything Alright?'" three years ago. It was full of brilliant pop songs with Brent Kenji's sweet voice and Andrew Leavitt's ultra-jangly guitars both leaving me wanting more, but then suddenly I read on the Matinée website that the band had split up, halfway through the recordings for their second album. What a bummer! I thought we would never be able to hear those, probably, great songs they had recorded, and instead I settled for the Young Tradition, a new band formed by Brent and a Swedish friend of his. Their EP, 'California Morning', is a very good substitute for the Fairways, but still... I missed them.
Then one day I was browsing through the Matinée website looking for some records to buy, and there it was pn the "forthcoming records" list : 'This Is Farewell' by the Fairways. So they had changed their mind! After reading the information about the record, I understood that the album would be made up of those recordings made for the second album, plus some compilation tracks, B-sides etc, but that doesn't really matter. It's
great anyway!
The Fairways' swan song album contains 13 tracks, all of them fantastic in their own way. My favourites are the covers presented, 'Little White Lies' (Dick Haymes) and 'The Rain Fell Down'(Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes), but it's hard to pick the best songs here. It may sound cliché, but it's true. I suggest that if you like your indiepop songs jangly and sweet, you better give this album a chance. And certainly their first album too! Well, what are you waiting for?
