I first discovered the French label Talitres through the National, who were signed to it in their early career. Talitres have put out some fine albums over the years, and this eponymous second album from the band Thousand is the latest of many.
Thousand is the brainchild of young French singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephane Milochevitch, who is backed here by Olivier Marguerit (bass, keys and vocals), Raphaël Séguinier (drums) and Emma Broughton and Maud Nadal (both backing vocals). Together they have produced a fine collection of pop-folk gems, which and are soaked in synth pop-Afro beats and combine thoughtful songwriting with a distinctive edge, Milochevitch, who spent most of his formative years in Texas, released Thousand’s debut album, ‘Flying Pyramid’, as far back as 2008. It didn't attract much in the way of attention at first, but all of a sudden it was picked upon and received quite considerable critical acclaim from the music press and fellow musicians alike.
Milochevitch is known for his clever wordplay, and there is a lot of that on ‘Thousand’. Like some of the other acts on Talitres, there is a slight likeness to Matt Berninger and his band, and 'Song of Abdication' in particular is an unlikely mix of the National and early Depeche Mode. 'The Wave' is a groovy number, while 'Eden' is fast and 80's-influenced and for me the highlight of the album.
‘Thousand’ is another great addition to Talitres’ long list of albums, and will hopefully kick start this wonderful label into getting noticed a bit more. They do deserve it. Magnifique!
